CAMPAIGNERS who stepped in front of bulldozers to stop the destruction of a nature reserve are being asked to share their memories of the protest.

Foxhill Bank nature reserve, Oswaldtwistle, was set to be wiped out on August 14, 1987 but local residents took action to save it.

Hyndburn Council subsequently bought the site and leased it to Lancashire Wildlife Trust in 1989, to be managed as a nature reserve in partnership with volunteers.

The trust is now hoping to make a collection of photographs, written songs, poems and memories of Foxhill Bank, before or after the threat to close it.

These will be put together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the bulldozers being turned away.

Residents can leave their contributions with the voluntary reserve manager, Stuart Noke, at 3 Spring Terrace at the bottom of Mill Hill, Oswaldtwistle, or by telephoning 01254 233662.

Contributions can also be given to Anne Hourican at the Hyndburn Council offices at Scaitcliffe House, Ormerod Street, Accrington 01254 380156) or with John Lamb at the Wildlife Trust HQ at The Barn, Berkeley Drive, Bamber Bridge. PR5 6BY, email jlamb@lancswt.org.uk.

As part of the celebrations there will be guided walks and a conservation day on the nature reserve on Saturday August 18.

Photographs, press cuttings, stories, poems will be displayed at Lock Street Institute in Oswaldtwistle and there will be an evening of entertainment by local bands.

Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the anniversary.
