ONE of Britain's best Elvis impersonators was lucky to escape serious injury in a motorway smash.

Steve Preston, 42, from Haslingden, was travelling home from a gig in London on Tuesday night with his youngest son John when his car collided with another vehicle at 70mph.

A passing paramedic stopped to give medical assistance. John suffered shock along with neck and shoulder injuries, and was also taken to hospital.

Steve's management company said that after the crash doctors initially feared he had suffered a broken neck but after X-rays and a CT scan he was released from hospital with severe whiplash.

He was due to perform at Burnley Mechanics Theatre on Friday but the concert has been rescheduled for November 28.

Keith Lowe, from Zebra management, said: "We are confident that Steve's resolve will see him though this accident and hopefully be back on stage before his fans in the near future - hopefully as soon as the doctors allow him to."

Steve has been an Elvis tribute artist for 20 years, playing packed-out venues all over the world and is still the only one to have performed for the Queen.
