A UNITY concert is taking place in Blackburn next month in memory of tragic Rossendale girl Sophie Lancaster.

Promoters of the one-day music festival at the Sir Charles Napier pub, in Limbrick, didn't even know Sophie, who died after being attacked in Stubylee Park, Bacup, in August.

But young web entrepreneur Gemma Walker has been inspired to take positive action, amid calls for greater understanding for marginalised young people across East Lancashire.

Police believe the former Haslingden High School Sophie, who was attacked along with her boyfriend Robert Maltby, was targeted because of their alternative style of clothing.

The situation has intensified in recent days with an attack of a group of teenage emos' in Holcombe Drive, Burnley, and disquiet among shopkeepers in Blackburn over young moshers congregating on Church Street.

Gemma's concert, with the backing of new campaign group SOPHIE (Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere) - launched by her mother Sylvia - has been arranged with the aim of bringing young people together.

"It was an absolutely terrible thing to happen to someone just because of the way they were dressed," said Gemma, from the Highercroft area of Blackburn, who runs The Goff Shop, her own internet accessories store.

"We just wanted to do something for young people and we have been surprised by the response we have received," added Gemma, 24, who has arranged the event alongside fellow alternative Blackburn web retailers Phoenixx Rising.

Ten bands, chiefly punk, metal and indie outfits, from across East Lancashire have been lined up for the November 3 gathering.

On the bill so far are Cosmic Slop, Halo, Versatias, AOS, Lead The Charge, Stillborn, The Ambivalent Complex, Bloodlust and Sinnergod.

Part of the fundraising at the gig will involve a raffle.

Substance Studio at Rowley has already donated free studio time as a prize and organisers.

The entry fee for the gig is £2, payable on the door.

This is the second memorial concert held in memory of Sophie.

The first took place at Bacup Borough FC earlier this month and was arranged by Kelly Roddy, of the band Cosmic Slop.

Bacup Borough also dedicated their recent tie against Abbey Hey to Sophie's memorial fund, raising £1,000 for the cause.
