RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans today spoke of his disgust at the decision of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to recommend the ending of the moratorium on whaling.
Mr Evans tabled a motion in the Council of Europe over the issue, and gathered support from from five countries on the issue, all of whom condemned the vote by the IWC.
Speaking at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, Mr Evans said: "The moratorium on whaling should remain. Whales are not a threat to fish stocks and whale tourism is now worth over $1billion annually.
"Many whale species are greatly diminished and a number close to extinction. Any move to restart whaling would certainly push a number of these at risk species of whale over the edge.
"International opinion is on the side of those who want the moratorium to remain in place. Right-minded people simply do not want to see these beautiful creatures hunted to extinction and I am glad that my motion received the support that it did.
"I hope that those 33 members of the IWC who voted in favour of the resumption of whaling will reconsider their position on this matter we cannot allow whales to be hunted to extinction."
