A message to Beverley Knight, Joss Stone and Ms Dynamite - raise your game, because British soul star Terri Walker has just raised the bar with her latest release I Am.
Carrying on from her Mercury Music Award nomination, Walker hasn't faded into the background even if others have shifted more units so far.
In fact it sounds like she has been given a freedom not usually granted to upcoming singers - and the positive results are clear.
You can't make a smooth-sounding album like this if you have record company bosses breathing down your neck, dishing out diktats from the top.
Instead she was given the expert help of some of the best producers available such as Gerry Brown, Sammy Jay, and James Yarde.
Musically it's a great blend of pop, soul and R n' B, all joined with Terri's exquisite vocals.
Her vocal range is similar to that of Mary J Blige. In fact casual listeners probably wouldn't believe that a British artist could produce such a deeply-rooted, swinging pop album.
Standout tracks are Imperative, I Don't Care and title track I Am - all would sound right at home on the airwaves.
With an album as good as this, it'd be criminal if Terri Walker wasn't a massive star in the very near future.
Released May 8, 2006.
