Rioja comes in many guises and varies enormously in taste and quality but here's a very smooth reason why it is the red everyone associates with Spain.
It's made with the country's own Tempranillo grape and aged in American oak barrels but the taste of wood doesn't dominate.
An average 13 per cent alcohol helps to make this a versatile wine for all kinds of occasions at a very reasonable price.
