Police in Darwen have seized 79 bottles of beer, 80 cans of lager, 12 bottles of cider, six bottles of vodka and other alcohol from young people in recent weeks.

And most of it was taken from youngsters in Sunnyhurst Woods.

One 18-year-old had to be rescued from the river running through the woods and taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital after falling in while he was drunk on March 31.

The Friends of Sunnyhurst Woods are now joining police on the patrols, which will take place every night this week.

The Friends were holding their annual spring clean of the woods today so are determined to keep the area in a good condition.

Insp Andrea Bradbury said: "The Friends want young people in the woods but they don't want the damage they have caused."

A Police and Communities Together meeting for north Darwen residents taking place tomorrow tonight will discuss the wider issue of problem youths and anti-social behaviour in the community. The meeting will be held at 6.30pm at Earcroft Children's Centre in Monton Road.

If kids are going to damage it then the woods should be locked at night!

I was very interested to read the problems in Sunnyhurst Woods, as a resident of the Whitehall area, we have encounted the same problem. My main concern is that large groups of teenagers where hanging around the local shop asking adults to purchase beers, largers etc and adults where happy to do so. As a society all of us must start taking responsibilty along with shop owners who employ staff who are not much older that the teenagers who are trashing our streets and parks.

Kids do this wherever they are. Its part of being a kid. Granted they do it worse nowadays - with the avalibility of alchol being so prevelent.
Loads of used to go out camping to woods out of the way when i was 17.

Out of sight out of mind an all that.

You cant stop it.

It's not just Darwen or Blackburn it is a problem in every area in every town.
Teenagers have large sums of pocket money nowadays and i think that is the root of the problem.

WHEN WE WERE KIDS WE GOT £1 SPENDIN MONEY AND WE WERE MADE TO SAVE HALF AND SPEND HALF TO LEARN THE VALUE OF MONEY ALSO THE MONEY WE GOT WHEN IT WAS THE WHIT WALKS AND CHRISTMAS AND BIRTHDAY MONEY WE HAD TO SAVE 3/4S OF IT OF IT WE PUT IT IN OUR POST OFFICE SAVINGS ACCOUNT DO PARENTS NOT ENCOURAGE THEIR CHILDREN TO SAVE THEIR MONEY THESE DAYS AND IF THEY WANT SOMETHING SAVE UP TO BUY IT THEY WILL THEN LOOK AFTER THINGS PROPERLY

I have to agree on this one. Not all kids are the same and that today children get far more pocket money than they should to buy both beer and cigarettes.

I have a 14 year old son who visits the White Hall area of the town almost everynight with his frineds. My son gets his pocket money in a way through me buying him treats and luxury items instead of cash in his hands.

My son is very open with me and has told me a number of times that his had a drink or has asked if its ok to do so. But I make it clear to my son that I don't mind him having a brink every now and again as long as its indoors at his friends, at home are at his dads and he also knows that I don't agree with kids drinking out in the public (I dont think anyone should be drinking on the street let alone kids).

I also feel that all children today are pushed into one big Category buy 99% of the community, but not all children are the same. For example: They wear hooded tops with there hoods up to keep them warm - does this mean there out to cause trouble? The number of children in groups I have passed and have been polite is what the 99% of the community would be shocked by.

Going back before christmas now my son and his frined was stopped on there way home by a police officer in a police van and they was asked if they had beer or drugs on them and they both replied 'No', the officer checked them and even smelt there breath and let them contiue on there journey as they was all clear.

I have been told that an officer possibly didnt have the right to shop and search without another officer present or feeding fetails back to the station, but I beleive that officer was only doing his job and that doing this does make children more aware of the fact that if they do get stopped then they can be searched and checked for beer and drugs.

I think the police should be doing more stop and search on teenagers and maybe signs placed in troubled area's highlighting the fact that they can be stopped and searched in public.

Its a catch 22. They say children staying indoors and playing on computers isnt a healthy matter and should be out and about, so when our children do go out and about (like I used to as a child) them children are in the wrong.

I used to hang around on street when I was a child with my frineds and we never used to bother anyone.

I agree and maybe parents need to know more too.
If you visit Lancshire Constabulary on the web it tells you about stop and search.

I totally agree with you...

I think it should be that the police should be able to stop and search anyone and this should be made public on the News, T.V ads, Signs in town centers and troubled area's and even in newspapers both local and national, so that parents are made aware of the situation as well as the children themselves.

Parent these days seem to want to be best friends with their kids rather than discipline them.
Police and teachers have had any powers they used to have taken away.
So now we have (not all of them) unruly, disrespectful, drunk or stoned teenagers bringing down the standard of life for many.
This hasn't happened by accident, I just hope those who have driven things to be like this are now happy.

Yep, its a disgrace. I think the new law should be BAN ALL CHILDREN FROM ALL STREETS AT ALL TIMES> we do not want to see hear or speak to them. They are horrid. Especially little boys cos they are made from slugs and snails and puppy dogs tails. Now the girls are made from sugar and spice and all things nice.lol. wot about that them.
