NEWCASTLE United are weighing up a move to scupper Mark Hughes' bid to sign striker Shabani Nonda.

Reports on Tyneside suggest new Toon manager Sam Allardyce is keen to recruit the DR Congo international, who spent last season on loan at Ewood Park.

United were keeping tabs on Nonda last season under Glenn Roeder and, although Allardyce will have his own ideas in the transfer market, the player is still in the Magpies' sights.

A source close to the club said: "Nonda would offer some physical presence and strength."

Hughes has signalled his intention to take the 30-year-old on a more permanent arrangement from Italian giants Roma.

And he is prepared to pay the £2 million price tag for Nonda, which was agreed within the initial terms of the loan.

Despite an erratic first season in the Premiership, scoring just eight goals in 35 appearances, Hughes believes there is plenty more to come from the former prolific Monaco frontman.

He said: "I think he is one of those players that next year will come through.

"He'll be a lot stronger and we're going to try and sign him if we can."

Midfielder Jason Koumas is another player whose future is still to be decided.

And the Welsh inter-national, who is attracting interest from Everton, Celtic and Aston Villa, as well as Rovers, has revealed he won't be making his mind up about where he will be playing next season for at least another fortnight.

The 27-year-old will also have talks with Baggies boss Tony Mowbray and chairman Jeremy Peace although it is almost certain he will leave the Championship side.

He said: "I'll have a break and decide what I'm going to do in a couple of weeks.

"You wouldn't believe how much I want to have a break now and then decide what I'm going to do in the summer. I've got a lot of thinking to do. I'll have a meeting with the manager and the chairman and see what is happening."

Good - Newcastle can have him, cant believe Sparky punting £2m for him, riduculous he's not that bad but he doesnt realy have a dimension about him that would strenghten our team. I like Benni Roberts and Derbs, shame one of them is going to be benched but at least we wont be paying another benchwarmer if ncastle sign him

The mags are welcome to him. I don't rate Nonda and he did little to convince me otherwise last season. We should keep the £2m we are going to waste on him by spending it on a renewed attempt to lure bel-end back to blackburn.

Non to Nonda! He is average at best. I really can't see why Sparky rates him.

I'm actually quite worried about next season. This season I thought the boys did really well, great season if only we'd had a better start

However, a number of clubs around us have been taken over by multi-millionaire, or are just spending big

ie

Villa
West Ham
Newcastle
Tottenham

all spending big

Plus Man city's ladyboy owner will pump plenty of money in

If we can't keep hold of our top players and add at least one big signing, we'll be in trouble. I can't se Nonda being the answer

Nonda is a class finisher, except on penalties.

We should give the lad a chance. We need a bigger squad. Do you think Bellamy will be happy to sit on the bench?

WHAT PRICE 6TH PLACE?

There might not be gold in the hills now Uncle Jack is watching Rovers from a loftier position, but there’s goals in them thar strikers. I see Derbyshire and Gallagher as the future of the club up front in a few years time. Gallagher the more creative and the slicker passer of the ball and Derbyshire the runner and the finisher. Roberts is proud to be a Rover and his physical presence and commitment make him useful to have around too. McCarthy may not be staying – we can’t bank on him being here for long as things stand. If he leaves we’ll be glad we’ve got Nonda around. He’s been used to having more time and space than he’s given in the Premiership and he’s not the first foreign striker to get the first season blues. At £2m he’s a bargain. He is tough and his touch is reasonable. He’s a decent finisher, half decent in the air and he’ll do much better next season. There’s a good reason why Allardyce is interested and I’d certainly prefer him to Beattie.

With all the money floating around this summer, I’d see us finishing comfortably mid-table with those boys up front. Trouble is, that means we lose Pedersen, Bentley, McCarthy and perhaps a few more next summer because they want to be in the Top 6.

So the question is – are we going to consolidate in mid-table and be financially secure for the medium term as a result of an exodus in 2008 which gives our young players the chance to emerge or are we going to go out on a limb and try to stay ahead of the nouveau riche chasing pack and have a crack at consolidating in the Top 6 instead?

Friedel, our back 4 and our midfield are Top 6. I’d like to bring in either Jagielka or Koumas if we can get a decent deal done, but the more pressing need is up front.

To compete in the Premiership, FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA next season we need another top class striker to partner McCarthy. Someone who will not be in awe of him, but who will push him to be a better player and lay chances on a plate for him in order to give him another shot at the golden boot. Bellamy is the answer. His pace, work rate, determination, teamwork and finishing ability will be the difference between progress and watching helplessly as other teams overtake us next season.

Hughes brought in Kuqi and Jeffers with the intention of giving them a shot at proving themselves at a higher level and he’s about to do the same with Nonda. If successful, they were a bargain and if not, an investment to be realised on resale back to their rightful level. Benitez has done the same with Bellamy and to criticise that would be hypocritical. Right now Bellamy is worth £9m or £10m to Blackburn Rovers as a talisman to take us forward. For God’s sake let’s just pay it.

The news on us signing Nonda is news to us.
I cant comment on to much as ive not seen the lad play but by the sounds of some of the comments from your fans he sounds like another Luque.
Good player but just not doing it.
Id love us to try and sign Forlan or Crespo.
I think owen will leave, Oba will improve with the likes of Viduka along side him but i would love a quallity BIG name striker plus id pay 1.8 million for Derbyshire, the lad is like a young ian rush without the canny tash like.

What is it about you Newcastle fans? Always living the dream about how you should be champions and dreaming of which players you should sign for. Your chances of winning anything ended a long time ago when Shearer, Ginola et al left. You should have gone for someone like Roberts last season when he became available but he isn't what the mags fans call a superstar signing. You would rather waste your money on a flop like Duff, Luque, Parker, Boumsong....I could go on but I can't be bothered!

Don't worry lads if Hughesy wants this guy then we'll sign him. This story was on the net a couple of weeks ago it's just another exmaple of the lazyass journalism from the LET. Shouldn't last night's back page have been about the legendary Tugay's retirement from international football after 17 years & 94 caps? Maybe they'll pick up on it tonight but I won't hold my breath.

Not when it's refering to something music related, like a nice big phat beat for instance.

However that's quite incidental to the fact that you are without doubt a complete bellend.

If I'm honest I'm suprised nobody has pointed this fact out to you before.

Is it just me or is anybody else starting to regret forking out 4 a season ticket for the coming year? The noises coming out of Ewood don't sound promising. Williams tells us we are going to be 'prudent' in the transfer market (not that prudent with his own salary though) and our best players' agents are touting them round the premiership to the highest/first bidder. William's does state however that we don't need to sell anyone. **** me aren't we lucky! I think everybody knows we don't need to sell anyone, under the new TV deal the premiership clubs are minted. That's why prem clubs are being bought by foreign investors. Its not for the love of football but for the money they can make out of Sky/Setanta. So in the name of god, give Sparky some DECENT money to spend before he sods off to a club who will.

How any Rovers fan can suggest Duff being a 'flop' is beyond me?! He's possibly the best player i've ever seen at Rovers. Single-handedly got us into Europe twice while knob-head Souness was here. Legend.

As for Newcastle, you can't fault their fans but the club has been a joke recently. They did us a massive favour though!!!
