CCTV footage is being examined by police investigating an alleged attack on a 43-year-old Preston man in Darwen.

The man was found unconscious with serious head injuries when police were called to Darwen Bus Station, Church Street, shortly before midnight on Saturday.

The man had earlier attended a 21st birthday party for another Preston man, who is originally from Darwen, in the Bridgewater pub, Church Street.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with serious head injuries and has since been transferred to Royal Preston Hospital, where his condition is described as stable.

Police have spoken to the 43-year-old but enquires are continuing.

A 19-year-old man from Darwen was arrested nearby and has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Det Sgt Mick Cross, of Darwen CID, said: "We are carrying out a thorough investigation and I urge anyone with information about the incident to contact us.

"We believe the man may have been caught up in an earlier fight involving a number of people outside the bus station and nearby Bridgewater pub.

"At this stage we do not believe a weapon was used and we suspect the attack occurred outside the pub."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 1 25 35 45 quoting log reference number 462EQ/230208 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

how can Det Sgt Mick Cross say he's part of Darwen's CID when darwen don't even have a 24hr police station. In an emergancy the police have to travel from blackburn to darwen. No wonder Darwens in the state it is!!

Because he's part of Darwen CID.

Not true. It is a 24hr police station, with night patrols just the same as Blackburn. The enquiry desk isn't staffed 24 hours, but nor is the one at Blackburn.

well every time I've been bk to darwen and drove past the police station its been shut. not like a few years bk wen u could just walk in if u needed help. I personaly think that all police stations (not only darwen)should be open to the public 24/7. thats what our taxes pay for isn't it at the end of the day (as well as other public services).

I do agree - maybe there's a case for small village stations being closed outside office hours, but Darwen is a fairly large place and it should at least have the facility for people to go inside at any time, even if they have to press a buzzer and wait for a patrol to come in and speak to them.

I was just pointing out though, that even thought the building is closed up, there are patrols who work nights and if they are not inside the building then they will be out and about on the streets of Darwen - it isn't policed from Blackburn at all.

just my curiosity, but are u in the police force by any chance?

If I was a cop, I wouldn't say so on here anyway - Pohaku is the handle I use to post my own personal views about things, some of which are quite opinionated - I wouldn't want anyone to read my views as Pohaku, and take them as the words of a police officer!

Read into that what you will...
