A 15-year-old boy has been found guilty of murdering Sophie Lancaster - who was kicked and stamped to death for being dressed like a goth.
After the jury's verdict, the judge lifted an order so that Brendan Harris and Ryan Herbert, 16, who had previously admitted her murder, could be named.
Following the verdict, it emerged that Herbert, of Rossendale Crescent, Bacup, and Harris, of Spring Terrace, Bacup, have previous convictions for kicking and stamping on a 16-year-old boy in the park last April.
Four months after being given six months' community service orders at Rossendale Youth Court, Harris and Herbert carried out the 'savage and merciless' attack on Sophie, 20, and Robert, 21, who lived together in King Street, Bacup.
Police said that the pair were remorseless and seemed to have enjoyed carrying out the violence.
And Det Supt Mick Gradwell: "There seems to be groups of people who seem to enjoy going around doing this type of thing without any thought for the consequences and it must stop."
Sophie and Robert were walking home from a friend's house shortly before midnight when they began chatting with a group of teenagers.
They drifted into the park where the good-natured conversation continued and they even handed out cigarettes to the group.
However, the mood changed suddenly when the five teenage boys savagely turned on Robert in the skate park area.
Someone was heard to shout "let's bang him" and the Harris started the violence with a flying kick to his head.
Sophie cried for them to stop as she cradled her Robert's head on her lap.
Her plea went unheeded as Herbert delivered a volley kick to her face, with Harris joining in to kick and stamp on her head as she lay on the ground, the court was told.
The jury of nine men and three women took just two hours to return the guilty verdict at Preston Crown Court.
Harris, dressed in a dark grey suit, black shirt and not wearing a tie, did not react in the dock as the unanimous verdict was read out.
Sophie's family cheered as the verdict was read out before her mum, Sylvia, broke down in tears.
Three other teenagers have pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm against Robert.
They cannot be named for legal reasons.
The three youths were initially on bail at the beginning of the trial but were then remanded in custody by Judge Anthony Russell QC.
Judge Russell praised the conduct of Sophie's family throughout "the harrowing" trial.
He also went on to award £250 each to the four teenage witnesses who had stayed with Sophie and Robert and called an ambulance for their public spirit.
The judge said: "They were all clearly very shocked and outraged and in some cases their loyalties were very strained but they showed commendable courage."
Judge Russell said he was duty bound to give Harris and Herbert life sentences given their convictions for murder, but that he would set the tariffs after reading pre-sentence reports.
Sentencing was set for April 28.

These are animals but after all after the pain and suffering that they caused their two victims and the sorrow that they have caused to the victims parents family and friends we now need to see a firm punishment. Sophie has gone and can never been replaced however it is likely that these two scum bags will be freed within ten years at an age were they are young men and will probably be given a new life on their release, probably heros to the other scum that were involved. Lets just see what the senrence will be Jamie Bulgers death was horrific the two that did it are now enjoying their lives. ???????

Who advised him to plead "Not Guilty" ? Who advised him not to answer questions? Who did his "prepared" statement for him? If he had gone to prison for the previous attack she might still be with us today. This could easily have been a double murder.Well done Lancashire Constabulary for bringing these thugs to justice.

We are living in a very bad world now - who would want to bring up children in a place when children are day in day out becoming killers. They have tortured the friends and families of their victims and create an environment of hatred and fear. It hardly seems equal that they cause so much pain and all they lose is their freedom. Something needs to be done!!!

Its about time. Bacup has always had a bad reputation for gangs of youths beating people for nothing which is something the police have also known. It's a tragey that Sophie was murdered by these sub human scum. I don't agree with the comments that their families lives have also been ruined. Why did the parents let the scum out drinking till all hours? They have a huge reponsibilty for the outcome of the fatefull night. Lock the culprits up for life - a real life time not just a token time. Praise to the four that stayed to help - they really did show courage. I hope Rob finds the strength to move forward (he will never get over loosing Sophie)

Having had to live around these scumbags for the worst five years of our lives,Had our kids consistantly terrorised by Ryan and his extended family,had our cars and property destroyed on a regular basis-and were unable to do anything other than remove ourselves from Bacup-All I can say is I blame Bacup-It holds these behaviours in the highest esteem,it protects toerags like these two who brutally murdered Sophie...Fair play to the Judge-High time these people were named and shamed!Now what is going to happen to the rest of this human garbage,I'm sure anyone from Bacup would be able to name every last one of you...Something needs to be done before this endemic violence claims yet another innocent life.

As has already been stated, I hope the punishment fits the crime, and these idiots are not out in 10 years with their lives ahead of them. As for their families - didn't the mother of one of them laugh as her son was being questioned? She is as guilty as he is.

I am sure content of court could be proven. After reading the above comments I can understand the feelings of everyone, but to injure or harm this "POND SCUM" would be a total waste of time. I agree with option 4 suggested by bob from bburn. As a relative of Rob I personally would enjoy being left alone with all of them for an hour, I know I would be the only one left standing. But what would be the point? Would Rob get better quicker, would Sophie come back to life? The answer is no. All that would happen is another parent would suffer the loss of a child. Even though the parents of this scum shouldn't be allowed to have kids. If they can laugh and joke about something as serious as this then they aren't really parents. Their children have ruined more than just Rob and Sophies lives but the lives of everyone who knew them. I just hope when they are inside the reasons for them being there are known throughout the prison cos if it is they won't be lasting long before they are crying for their mummies and their will be no-one there to help.

I cried when I saw Robert, Sophies mum and friend on TV tonight. They will never get over the awful tragedy. Keep strong. The lowlife which murdered and battered Sophie and Robert should be tortured, battered and then beheaded. I know you say that violence isnt the answer but in this case IT IS. The thought of them suffering is a great feeling

When scum breed you get scum, what other outcome could you expect? With our benefit system we are encouraging people like this to breed, subsidising them.If it were politically possible society would benefit from a programme of eugenics to try over time to improve the quality of the gene pool. But we won't of course and incidents like this will become increasingly commonplace.

i have been watching the news since it first hit our ears.at last some justice has been done to flush scum away.kids are all they are. chavs are their craze and it seems normal for scum like this to intimidate others unchecked.it happens all over .gangs of idiot youths roam around, alone there weak ,in gangs they are a force. ppl are scared to talk back to them, why is this so.20 years ago we used to get smacked by teachers, by police ,even by our parents.granted there is a fine line with abuse and a crack. but look at the stats. youth crime has risen, no deterant today. they laugh at school ,laugh at police and openly abuse drugs and alchohol. is this the way society is going? softly softly to criminals? screw that .. shoot the scum and rid society of this evil chav scum.

Peversely one of the brothers from Shawforth was formerly at BRGS - when this happened Myscough College. The other brother went to Fearns and was attending there when this happened - then moved to the Special School at Oswaldtwistle

I saw Rob interviewed on Granada news tonight and can safely say he is more of a man than the 5 scumbags put together will ever be.

Also, I hope the hurt and terrible pain you all feel will decrease with the passage of time. I know it will never go away totally, believe me I do know this, but it does become easier to live with as the years go by.

Ryan now must be really impressed by the example his cousins the renound 'Bulbheads' have set him - not only have they bragged about their involvement in incidents of jumping on other people's heads but one of them has bragged about taking over Bacup in the future by impregnating his current partner as many times as he can. I was never aware that one of the "terrible twins " ( not twins but look alike) was at BRGS? Surely not ! By no means , not intelligent enough or hardworking enough ?
As for the school in Oswaldtwistle, I hope it's not the special one which is meant for learning disibilities rather than behavioural problems? Because, unfortunately, these schools appear to get the overspill from oversubsribed schools with pupils who have been excluded because the correctional ones are packed to capacity and then this has a knock on effect with the pupils already there who are there for the correct reason.
Anyway, sorry, I am sidetracking from the thread.
I hope that some good will come from all of this and my thoughts are with Sophie's family and Rob's too.

Does anyone remember the incident at Bacup Cricket club about 20 years ago when a concert for heavy rockers was organised - 3 rockers from out of town were nearly beaten to death for being different - you may think I'm sidetracking a little but the teenage perpetrators of this crime served between 12 and 6 months inside - fortunately no-one died. These scum went on to prosper very well in Bacup through very dodgy dealings and it is now rumoured that they live very comfortably indeed. Lets hope the judge serves out the right sentence this time round.

Whilst I can appreciate and respect your comments Robs Uncle. You need to understand, people are sick to death of hearing so many so similar stories and without Justice being seen to done.
The scroats know this and have no fear of authority. I ask you, how many more Sophie's does there have to be ?
The Pc and do gooders have a lot to answer for. I would go as far as say, they have blood on their hands. If people rightly feel the Law does not protect them, what are they to do ? Cower in fear ?
I've watched the interviews with Rob, its heartbreaking to watch and I dont know the lad.
Outside the Court and the conduct of the Mother, it makes you wonder about the state of Society. I know they're a minority however, the so called minority have the ear of Government and appear to be appeased at every turn. In all the while, decent people are increasingly penalised for simply trying to survive.
