Witness appeal over fatal smash on A59
 |
| AFTERMATH: Police officers examine the crash scene after three vehices were involved in the fatal accident at Samlesbury |
WITNESSES have been asked to help police discover what caused a fatal head-on smash on the A59.
Sameer Vohra, 34, of Blackburn, died when his silver BMW car collided with a Daf HGV on the A59, Samlesbury, just before 1.30pm yesterday.
The female passenger of the BMW was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.
A Peugeot people carrier ran in to the back of the car and three people were treated for minor injuries.
In the wake of the tragedy, BAE Systems revealed there were plans to install a mini roundabout at the junction of the A59 and Myerscough Smithy Road - very close to where Mr Vohra died.
The roundabout, which may have prevented the accident, was agreed when BAE granted planning approval for its aerospace park last year.
Sergeant David Tonge, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would like to appeal to anybody who may have seen the collision, or any of the vehicles in the moments before, to contact police.
Any amount of information may help us to find out exactly what happened."
Malcolm Adams, of BAE Systems, said it was a dreadful accident and numerous workers had heard the bang made by the impact of the vehicles.
He said: "A mini-roundabout and cycle lane will be installed along that stretch of road.
"The new entrance we are building further up the road will offer safer entry and exit which is a major issue for us."
Chris Holtom, county councillor for the Samlesbury area, said the accident was confirmation of his worst fears regarding the stretch of road.
He added: "From the Trafalgar junction to the Mellor Brook roundabout this is one of the most dangerous roads in Lancashire.
"This death shows the real threat this road can have.
"There are major safety concerns on this stretch and I am working very closely with BAE to make sure any alterations are done properly.
"I don't think people realise how dangerous that road is.
"I use it regularly and often I seem to be the only one driving at a sensible speed."
A worker at the Boddington Arms pub, near to the scene, said she had struggled to get in to work following the smash.
She said: "I came down Cuerdale Lane and it was all blocked off.
"And when I got to Mellor Brook I had to tell them I worked down here, for them to let me through.
Anyone with information is asked to ring Lancashire Police on 08451 253545.

WHAT IS GOING TO BE DONE AND WHEN?? HOW MANY MORE SAMS NEED TO DIE FOR THE COUNCIL AND POLICE TO PULL THEIR FINGER OUT OF THEIR BACKSIDE AND COME UP WITH A SOLUTION?? I FOR ONE AM SICK OF THE SITE OF THE SO CALLED "SAFETY CAMERAS" WHICH ARE UP TO MAKE MONEY ON MAIN ROADS ***NOT*** ACCIDENT BLACKSPOTS!!!
SAM WAS A DECENT MAN WITH HIS WHOLE LIFE AHEAD OF HIM, HE WAS KIND AND TOOK ALOT OF PEOPLES PROBLEMS UNDER HIM AND HELPED OUT AS MUCH AS HE COULD. YOU WOULD NEVER SEE HIM ANGRY HE WAS ALWAYS SMILING AND ON ONE OCCASSION HE DIDNT SEE ME FOR 2 DAYS AND ASKED ME IF I WAS OK AS I WOULD EITHER DRIVE PAST HIM OR SEE HIM EVERYDAY!! MAY SAM GET A PLACE IN JANNAT AND MAY SOMETHING BE DONE IN HIS NAME AND SAVE LIVES!![bold]bold[/bold]

I understand your grief Yas but wagons are restricted to 56mph, wagon drivers can only put their foot down so much. i see people taking unnecessary risks each and every day and have close calls for what? to get somewhere maybe a couple of minutes earlier. and on the subject of the road safety, have a look at the picture and notice the double white lines, they are there for a reason.

Cars, and don't forget motorbikes, can be speeidng down this stretch of road every day. Police don't seem bothered about imposing speed limits, preferring to leave it as a lawless stretch. Never once (and I travel this road every day) have seen a mobile camera, whereas on Preston New Road you can find one, regular as clockwork on a Sunday, parked NEXT to the speed camera near Beardwood School. CRAZY!

Yas - you can't blame the lorry driver as the guy above says they are restricted.. Possible moment of madness on the drivers part i would guess. I'm sure something will be done now though.

The balance of probability in this instance - a fact suspiciously omitted in the LET article but NOT the LEP (hmm, conspiracy?) - is the departed's vehicle was cited as being on the wrong side of the road. Given the RTA site has double white lines (clearly ignored) means people like the first poster should take ownership and stop blaming other people. Even if every single measure was taken to prevent accident, you'll always get some nugget driving like a loon.

If as much energy was put into trying to learn the lessons of this tragedy rather than arguing, the roads would be substantially safer. As a previous poster pointed out 'no one survives this road' whilst stating other (assumed) fatalities.
Would the same level of debate/argument/supp
ort be forthcoming if the girl had been killed and the BMW driver just been injured?
One wonders if there is a lesson to be learned here, moreso if it will be.
May Allah recommend reading the highway code and driving in a safe and sensible manner.

Drivers think they can take that bend at high speed, all the people who have died on that road have been doing either high speed with high performance cars or typical overtaking dangerous driving, noone deserves to die but everyone knows what that road is like so slow down. We can only prevent these accidents by driving safely. I knew Sameer he was a decent guy. p.s Janazah (funeral) was today. Friday.

Are my eyes deceiving me or has somebody really posted that this road is haunted.....???? please dont try to suggest that a ghost has spooked him whilst he was adhering to the speed limit and the driving to the conditions before him?? Please don't try to go down the route of blaming everyone else except the person behind the wheel.
I completely agree with Omar that it is a safe road, for safe drivers.

The car was on the wrong side of the road having crossed double white lines when it collided head on with a lorry - I don't think it takes a genuis to work out who was to blame.
That said, no-one deserves to die.

as a lorry driver i travel every day past that point.no.1 there are speed cameras its also a 40mph area for both cars and lorries.who was on the wrong side of the road??so i dont want anyone blamed like the lorry driver.the right story will come out when it does quite a few on here will have to say sorry.lorry drivers are easy targets for speeding drivers.they det cut up.because they are doing 40mph the speed limit.so before anyone gets blamed.shut it.i also see lots of sympathy for the lorry driver who might well be beating himself up over this .and just may not be to blame.too many quick to judge

I never knew Sameer as a child or as a teenager but had known him for the last few years. His death has come as shock to all those who knew him and it is trajic that he will never get to see his kids grow up or give them all that they deserved. He did not have an easy life but did help those he could. Thank you Sameer for what you tried to do for me and my family.
May Allah Subhanatallah forgive his sins and grant him jannat. Ameen.

A lesson for all BMW and other German car drivers - your car may be powerful but it does not mean you can drive like a complete idiot.

My niece was the passenger in that car. She has been seriously injured but is thankfully alive. Please think of the families involved and stop trying to blame people.[bold]bold[/bold]

it`s sad that a happy and jolly good fellow like sameer has left us ,our prayers and thoughts are with the wife and kids ,bless them ,those kids will grow up without a father but i`m sure lots of memories has been left behind ,bless their heart and soul ,especially to the wife who will enjoy his life insurance and forget him soon.

Hello burger, barlick. There is not a speed camera on that road the speed camera you are thinking about is just after the Bay Horse going towards Clitheroe and that road is actually a national speed limit road not a 40mph road again the 40mph bit is after the roundabout going to Clitheroe and even then it yo-yo's from being 40 to national speed to 40 and back to national speed. Yes I do know that as I was only down that direction on Tuesday. So mayb you should consider your facts before spouting.
Whose ever fault it was, when I took my driving test double white lines meant you couldn't overtake. Or am I wrong?

Does anyone know what Sameer did for a living?
I guess he had a nice BMW car, and able to bring up four children aswell as help out a number of his friends who have posted above.
The news articles usually post peoples' occupation after they have passed away, so does anyone know what Sammy did for a living?

Too many people drive stupidly on this road. Earlier this week I had to break very hard to narrowly avoid a collision with an oncoming car. I came around a bend and the car was overtaking in a very unsafe place.
Lorry's don't kill people. People kill people.

It seems that Sameer was driving on the wrong side of the road overtaking. I have seen many many drivers overtaking at high speeds in their high performance cars on that stretch of road. The road is dangerous and it maybe haunted but surely all drivers should exercise great caution whlst driving on that road and should never overtake at high speeds.
Recklessness kills. Sameers BMW drove into the wrong side of the road directly into the lorry according to the accident and police people. I find it extremely appalling that theres many people actually questioning the driving and safety of the lorry driver. The lorry driver is not to blame.
May Allah give sameer jannat-ul Firdaus and bless his kabr with noor..ameen

Innah Lillahi Waiinah Ilaihi Rajioon.
Its pointless blaming the supernatural or others for this tragic accident when the person really to blame was the driver who tried overtaking at very high speed on a notoriously dangerous road ending up crashing his car into a lorry on the wrong side of the road.
This very tragic accident should be a lesson to all reckless drivers.

No, I don't know his occupation - I was just wondering, that's all.
Often a a story says something like: "Joe bloggs, who was a teacher/doctor/shopk
eeper ..." etc. I assume from the fact that Mr Vohra was obviously a very decent young man, with a large family and a nice car, that he had a job that would be worth mentioning as part of his tribute.
All of you people knew him, someone should mention what he did? If I were to pass away so tragically, I would like people to hear a little bit about me, what I did for a living and what part I played in the community, that's all.

tragic accident and RIP Sameer. I work at bae systems and i travel down that road most days, it is not a 40 mph limit, the whole section by bae is national speed limit. This bend is quite a long bend and can easily be taken at even 55 mph in my little corsa and if this guy has gone onto the wrong side of the road in a BMW then what speed must he have been doing? It is not a particularly bad road, it is just given that impression by the many idiots who drive wrecklessly and take unnesesary risks. That is clearly what has happened here, the only person to blame in this terrible accident is Sameer im afraid to say.

Having taken the time to read through all the comments posted.i would just like to offer my prayers and thoughts to the HGV driver and the lady in the people carrier they must be so traumatised by the severity of this accident and may never get behind a wheel again. Can we show some consideration to these ppl please.these same ppl will have to relive the accident when giving statements and again at the inquest.
The BMW driver was on the wrong side of the road if not for speeding he may of just had time to get back onto the right side of the road and this carnage would never of happened.
Remember this Speed kills,si kill ya speed

All you who are saying bmw was on the wrong side from the picture on the let page have missed an important detail it is not
on the wrong side as the kerb is on the left also if you look the peaugot van it has crashed into the back of the bmw road which suggests 2 things in my view either it was overtaking at the same time behind the bmw or was in someway obstructing the bmw to get back in lane hence crashing in the back of the bmw.I think there more to this accident that just a simple overtaking head on crash.

accidents dont just happen, crashing a car into an oncoming lorry while overtaking on double white lines isn't an accident.. an accident is walking down a street then being hit by a piano falling from a third floor window. Crashing a car into a highly trained lorry driver, its either bad luck or bad judgement on the drivers part. That said condolences to the family and the lorry driver who has no doubt been left in a state of shock follwing this terrible incident. Let it be a lesson to anyone who decides to overtake at an inappririate time. I was driving along there yesterday on the way to preston, for most of my trip I was stuck behind an elderly driver who for no apparent reason decided to ocillate their speed between 40 & 50mph. I felt I had to overtake them to protect my own safety and thiose behind me who would have no doubt felt the need to overtake two cars rather than one. Conclusion: driving is very dangerous, take care.

RIP a extremely terrible situation on the A59 again.I have seen so many accidents and agree something has to be done on a number of stretches of this road. But it is and always will be down to driver error. If you are prepared to overtake on this road at any point is crazy never mind when it clearly has two solid white lines on a blind bend.No blame at all lies with the HGV he has to live with it.

why is it that people find it so hard to be respectful even at such a sad time like this. Sammy lost his life driving a high performance car whilst overtaking. arguing about weather it could have been avoided or not is so pointless as it's not gona bring him back. he is gone bad driving or not he is no longer with us. why can't people pay appropriate respects to the appropriate families and leave it at that. there is always always a handful who feel the need to spoil things for the rest of us.
hope allah gives us all hidayat throgh sammy's death give his family sabar and bless his grave with noor.

Our hearts have hardened so much a guy has just died and people are posting horrible comments [quote]about his occupation, his wife forgetting him, enjoying the cash, it was his fault etc etc[/quote] If you have nothing decent to say remain silent. the brother is now 6ft under this earth and he needs are prayers and duas stop slandering him. Remember we all have to go one day, allah is the all forgiving and merciful, I did not know him and i have never seen him but going off the comments he sounds like a great brother whos heart was in the right place. May allah swt give his family sabar and may he breathe the fragrance of jannat in a peacefful and happy state ameen.
