Blackburn safe thieves escape with thousands of pounds

THREE thieves made off with thousands of pounds after breaking in to a working men's club.

The intruders broke in to Ewood Working Men's Club, in Bolton Road, and managed to steal safes containing the cash - thought to be around £2,000.

Cash box keys were also taken during the raid.

It is the third time the club has been targeted in recent months.

Officers were alerted to the latest break-in after the property's alarm was triggered by the burglars on Tuesday night.

Police believe that the thieves got in through the building's roof before lowering themselves to the ground and prising open interior doors with crow bars.

The safes would have been heavy and police believe they may have used a vehicle to help them make off from the scene.

Det Sgt Adrian McHugh said: "We believe these people knew what they are doing as they came equiped to do the job and have been specific about what they have taken.

"The safes would have been heavy and would have needed to be transported away from the scene. If anyone one saw a suspicous vehicle or noticed anything at the club at the time of the incident we would urge them to contact us."

CCTV, which hows at least three men inside the club, is currently being studied.

In January a similar amount of cash was stoln from the club after burglars broke in and tried to remove the sfaes. They were unsuccesful, but still managed to make off with several bags of cash.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 01254 51212.
