COUNCIL bosses say they intend to carry out "as many collections as possible" during the Blackburn and Darwen binmen's strike.

Blackburn with Darwen council is using a private firm to collect rubbish from homes hit by the strike over pay.

And skips have been placed in neighbourhoods, including outside schools, to collect household waste from overflowing bins.

Members of the Unite union have confirmed more strikes by bin men, street cleaners and gardeners will take place next Thursday and Friday in the ongoing row over changes to town hall salaries.

Thousands of residents did not have their bin emptied as a result of the first two-day walkout last week.

Now council bosses have advised people to put their bins out as normal on their collection date after employing Blackburn-based Neale's Waste Management to help out.

A spokesman said: "There is further planned industrial action next week but talks are continuing with the unions.

"The advice for residents is please continue to put your bin/items out on your collection day at the normal collection points and it is our intention to try and complete as many collections as possible."

Recycling collections will carry on as normal.

The skips are to be emptied and removed on Monday. A list of sites with skips is at www.blackburn.gov.uk.

Let's just make sure if the bins are put out that the collectors collect any rubbish at the side of the bins as well. Not just what is inside the bin. The council caused this problem so they should collect ALL rubbish put out.

Of all the places they could have placed skips, why the hell are they outside schools?

A friend of mine rang the council yesterday about the issue and the only option she was given was to walk 3/4 of a mile with her overflowing bin to her nearest skip! That is ludicrous! And what are the elderley and disabled supposed to do?

The forecast for blackburn this weekend and the most of next week will see temperatures of 23 degree's and the rubbish will just bake in the weather. I think environmental health will have a lot to say about their measures in place to dispose of rubbish, especially with skips being placed outside schools

I dont blame the bin men because they are right to strike over the pay cuts as it is unacceptable, i blame the people who announced the pay cuts in the first place.

Surely the Council should be talking to employees rather than to a private firm.It will cost a fortune, cause a real health hazard and we will be no further forward

while i feel sorry for anyone who has to take a pay cut, there is also the slight matter of the contract that all employees of bburn council have to sign and if they took the time to read them they would see in there that the employers have the right to amend pay structures/hours etc as and when they feel neccessary. If they arent happy with that maybe they should of read it though properly before signing,

i completely agree with your post anon. but what i want to comment on is the part about elderly and disabled ppl, perhaps the best thing to do would be help any one u know who is incapable of taking their bin to the skips for them. show community spirit and shame the council.

also even tho i dont live in blackburn i feel sorry for those who are gonna be missing out on enjoying their gardens in this wonderful weather bcos they will stink thanks to BWD council. i agree with the strikes but BWD council should sort it out before ppl begin rioting

BWD Council have posted all the locations of the skips on their website. But as i predicted, expect to find these skips full of tyres, car batteries and other items generally hard to dispose of like carpets and rubber for example as seen in heys lane's skips.

And re the comment from Mr Patel about how they used to use a bit of elbow grease when taking away the rubbish, i think Health and Safety had a big part to play in that, back then you didnt have to wear protective clothing or even the basic hi vis jackets. But thats all changed now and they have brought in measures to keep the risk of injury to a minimum because of the amount of people that claim these days for workplace injuries. They did used to have manners because i used to leave the back gate open and the bin men asked me if i wanted them to go into the garden and retreive my rubbish and did so every week. But in this kind of work, its not a job that is held down too well and has quite a lot of workers who quit just after a few weeks. And tbh, its not the most ideal job, with the smell and conditions you are expected to work in.

But there is no excuse for the lack of manners. Im never in when the collections are taken so the manners part doesnt really bother me

Obviously you dont believe in equality and diversity, so keep it to yourself and out of this discussion. The discussion is about the BIN MEN EMPLOYED BY THE COUNCIL and not about who and who doesnt work in waste management

i agree with mr patel, binmen whether there employed by council or agency are very ignorant and cant even wheel a bin to the back of a lorry and back to the premises it was situated, on top of that when they are emptying paper sacks and can bins i have to go out after they have gone and pick them all up of the street as it seems to be to difficult for them to do what they are employed and paid for. by the Mr Patel they are quite polite near xmas when they want a tip for the job they dont do

Mr Patel I'm glad you posted, firstly have you seen the alleys around where you live its disgusting. The side waste, the food that is thrown out on grassed area, which asian people say are feeding the birds, rats and other vermin won't touch because they know its for the birds do they? The streets are covered in take away wrappers, the bins that are placed outside your shops are used by shop keepers so no one can use them so they toss it on the floor. Self made markets selling fruit & veg that leaves its waste on the street, ash trays dumped from cars. maybe some of the reasons why no asians don't apply for jobs on the council, is they might have to clean up thier own crap. Now tell me that the bin men who work in your doesn't deserve what they get. Also isn't the rat population soaring in your area? Maybe they don't have manners because they're sick of picking up extra crap from your alley and the rest of it.
If you read properly also, you'll find out that these bin men are not asking for more money, they want to keep the money that thier on, The council want to just rip up a contract and force them to take a WAGE CUT you idiot. There is no one that i know would accept, whatever job they do, would want to do the same job that they have been doing for years for less money. That is why we have in this country contracts not sweat shops. Get over your ignorance and find out what this is about before you open your mouth, or are you just selfish.

Here we have a typical I don't care as long as I get what I want. Maybe this is the trouble with society. As for overpaid do me a favour. I am a street cleaner, I,m on 14.7k and stand to lose 1.4k and if I don,t sign by the end of the month I stand to lose a further 1.1k, that will take me down to 12.2k. Now you're telling me that I can bring my children up above the poverty line with that sort of money? and I know what the ignorant are going to say, get another job or its ok you can claim more tax credits. But the point is I like my job, I've also worked all my life and don't want to claim benefits. Many of my colleagues are in simular circumstances and believe that they just want what they signed a contract for. Isn't it about time the likes of us started fighting back against injustices? If we all, as a workforce, just roll over and just expect to be dumped on, then I might as well give up my job and probably live an easier life on benefits, I would get my rent, council tax paid for me, I would maybe get some help with electric and gas, I would also get plenty of money to spend on booze and enjoy the comfort of being able to spend a lot of time with my two and four year old. BUT I would rather work. Go figure!

Get off your fat backsides Burgess and your fellow dfat salaried directors and get on your hi-vis jackets and get the bins emptied instead of undermining your workforce by bringing in private companies, is this the first stage of getting rid of these binmen for privitisation . Take along your coalition buddies as you already have them in your pockets and squirming.

Firstly! why are the bins in Revidge not being emptied when it,s not a strike day? rubbish is strewn all over due to kids knocking bins over, which just adds to the already, rat infested new Bank rd, we are wading through the Asians takeaway rubbish, not only in the alleys, but on the streets and Mr Patel as the gaul to qualify this scum society to keep our land clean, don't insult us, you,re not capable of keeping the scum from your own pavements, get back to the s**t-holes you originate and make life easier for the clean folk of this land. Secondly, the refuse workers deserve every health hazardous penny they earn, but c'mon 'jobsworth' lads & lasses, take the over-flow we have now & again, rather than leave it behind for our Asian neighbours to empty and sift through.

asians keep our streets clean, best laugh in ages Mr Patel! have you ever seen an asian exert himself, have you ever seen an asian mother work? NO! they do driving jobs, run filthy shops and takeaways and over-flow call centres, sat on their arses. knocking on doors for votes, selling gas & elec, wrecking all our post offices, newsagents, chip shops etc. tell me i'm wrong! that we have asians down the mines, building roads, hay-baling, juggernaut driving, roofing, panel beating, tar-mac'ing and least of all, emptying bins. We tough Brits have women sweeping the streets and emptying bins, Good Luck to you refuse workers.

For many off you you are blinkered the strike is not about the binmen it is about the bully boy tatics the council have taken with all there employees THIS IS NOT A BIN STRIKE it is about the the threat that if people dont sign the agreement to change there contract and lose thousands of pounds a year they will be made un-employable this comes at the end of this month ( nice after all the tears i have gave to this council ) fotunatley for the many employees who have not been able to come out due to the threat of disaplinary action. The bin men are part of the only Union who support Industrial action if the rest of the employees from different sections had come out and brought the all operation to a stand still Social Services, benifits, Markets Grave diggers etc then people would have more to say than just blame the BIN MEN amny of the general public are all in favour of what the bin men are doing please support them they are not doing it for no reason " you have to think most strikes are for more pay this is only to be valued as an employee "

Aww,c'mon;Asian youth are the hardest working heroin dealers in the North west for Allah's sake!
They graft day and night to knock out the old smack, and get no appreciation from the general public for their hard-fought efforts!
The Asian community has done more for free enterprise in the UK than any other business concept.
Middle-Eastern imported narcotics are the backbone of the Asian community and the food and drink of the indiginous population.
