Cyclist dies in A59 crash at Sawley

A CYCLIST was killed after colliding with a car during an afternoon ride.

The 68-year-old cyclist, John Whittaker, of Mellor Brook, was cycling along the A59 at Sawley Brow, at around 1.45pm when he collided with the black Ford Focus.

Both the cyclist and the car were heading in the direction of Clitheroe.

An ambulance was called but the man died at the scene.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours while officers from the road policing unit carried out their investigations.

The driver of the car was not arrested in connection with the incident.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them on 0845 1 25 35 45 .

The cyclist was my closest and dearest friends Dad. It is such a heart breaking and tragic loss of such an amazing spirited man. He will be so sadly missed by all who knew him but no more than by his Girls and his much loved grandchildren. I feel honoured to have known you John. rest in peace xx
