THERE has been a drop in the number of cars abandoned on the streets of Blackburn with Darwen, new figures show.
The “bin the banger” scheme has seen the numbers fall by a quarter from 276 in 2003 to 205 last year.
Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration and environment, said: “We have cracked down on would-be dumpers and become a lot quicker at clearing them up.
“A few years ago, you’d have had to pay someone to take your old car away but now, scrap metal dealers will pay you up to £1,000 for the pleasure. This has definitely helped the situation but the council, police and fire service are playing an important role.”
Inspector Paul Goodall of Lancashire Police said: “This is excellent news for the local community.”
