DOCTORS’ surgeries across East Lancashire are set to extend their opening hours.
From September 1, almost two-thirds of surgeries across Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Rossendale and the Ribble Valley will begin opening earlier and in the evening and at weekends.
GPs across the country are being encouraged to open outside the normal nine-to-five, but as independent practices, they have the choice of whether or not to sign up.
A PCT spokesman said: “More surgeries are expected to come on board in autumn. We have significantly invested in this service to ensure patients have access to pre-bookable GP and practice nurse appointments during the extended hours slots.”
Dr Swamy Narayana, chairman of the PCT’s professional executive committee, said: “There are some patients who are dissatisfied with opening times, particularly those patients who commute to work, as well as carers and patients who find it hard to attend in the day.
“My surgery is giving a lead, but we would advise patients to contact their own surger y to see what times are available.”
