THE Blackburn End drummer, who has entertained crowds at Rovers for more than 10 years, has retired after developing arthritis.

Bill Toland, 46, has barely missed a game, home or away in the last decade.

But his drumming was conspicuous by his absence at Rovers’ first game of the new season.

Bill, from Huncoat, said that he has two reasons for putting down his drumstick — his medical problems and the fact he wants to sit with his two young “Rovers mad” sons.

He said: “I’ve had loads of stick while drumming but for every two people who criticise there are 100 who tell me they love what I do.

“I’ve been doing it for a long time and it’s taken its toll.

“I’ve got arthritis in my fingers, hand and shoulder. My joints are just worn out.

“The time has come for me to stop the drumming and a younger person to take over.”

Bill, who now sits in the Riverside Stand with his boys Toby, nine, and Tom, four, said some days last season the pain in his right arm was so bad that he could hardly write his name the day after a match.

Blackburn Rovers chief executive Tom Finn said: “Bill has become something of a cult figure among Rovers supporters on matchdays and we are very grateful.

“Matchday atmosphere is clearly important to both the fans and the team.”

Bill, a factory worker at Unison Engine Components in Burnley, said he started after buying a small Irish drum on holiday. He said: “I brought it to the ground and there was a great atmosphere because of the drum.

“I kept going for a few weeks and the club brought me in for a chat and said they would like me to keep going.

“There are times in tight matches when the crowd getting behind the team can really make a huge difference and I know I’ve played a part in that.

A BIG THANKS bill for adding to the atmosphere while me and my son have been at Rovers games. Often at low points you drums have got the crowds going again. You will be sorely missed.

I think it depended on where you sat. As a non-season ticket holder, if I was out of the way of the drummer (preferably in another stand) then he was perfect for gearing up the fans and getting us singing. But when I got a ticket close to him, what a racket!!!!

I wish him all the best though, he served us well

I'm one of the 2% then. I hope now to hear more varied chants than just 'Paul Ince's Blue and White Army' bang bang bang bang. Drummer definitely stifled creativity in the song department. Let's not a get a replacement for eff's sake.

What a sad day for Rovers. Bill has been the only source of match day noie on many, many occasions. I don-r know why it is we have such a subdued crowd. I really hope that we can get someone to take up Bill's mantle - and his drum! Otherwise the place is goi0ng to be even more dead than usual.

Thanks for all your efforts Bill and I wish you a very long and happy 'retirement'.

Come on all you would-be drummers - get down to Ewood and drum the place back to life!!

Sorry to hear you have arthritis Bill.

BUT Halleluyah. No more drummers thank you, one of the most annoying things EVER at Ewood Park. Now, maybe the atmosphere will get better and new songs will get song without the incessant thud of the drum spoiling it

Legend.

Annoying at times, but is known by fans of all Premiership clubs. Ewood is sadly far too quiet on match days, so thank God and thanks Bill for trying to get the team going. I am very confident that he has won us some points over the years and we should all be thankful for that.

Again, legend.

I for one liked your drumming Bill. It is better that Portsmouth's poncy bells, hate those!
Maybe somebody else could step in?
Happy Retirement!!

"We chased him out of the Riverside years ago."

You mean people in the Riverside actually stood up for something other than to flap their arms at the linesman?

:)

Plonkers - if you were real Rovers fans you would know we always stood in the Riverside before all you glory hunters arrived when JW flashed the cash!

I always preferred to stand on the Blackburn End in during those heady days of David Mail's perm, Windy Miller, Bald Eagle Steve agnew et al...

Even in the days of partial standing on the riverside, everyone used to leave 15 minutes before the end...
