A NEW footbridge is to connect an isolated housing estate to a town after the project was given the green light.

Hyndburn Planning Committee has approved plans for a pedestrian and a cycle bridge over the Leeds-Liverpool Canal to link the Sefton Farm estate to Clayton-le-Moors shops and community facilities.

Plans for a steel bridge, which will be painted green in a bid to blend it in with the surrounding area were submitted because Sefton Farm estate does not currently have any direct pedestrian links with any of Clayton-le-Moors amenities.

The bridge plan also includes landscaping and path finishing on the eastern bank of the canal.

The developers of Sefton Farm, Barratt Homes Ltd and Beezer Homes Ltd, have now handed over the sum of £96,859 which was agreed when permission was granted for the development over five years ago.

At a meeting yesterday Hyndburn’s Brent Clarkson said: “In addition the bridge will allow school children from the estate to access the neighbouring schools by foot without having to cross the busy Whalley Road or walk down Burnley Road.

“Residents will also be able to access other facilities such as pubs, clubs, libraries etc on foot without having to travel by car.

This bridge is part of an overall strategy to improve outdoor facilities for the residents of Hyndburn making it a healthier and better place to live.”

AlexSJ, Clayton le Moors says...

It would be nice if the local council would actually ask the residents of the Sefton Farm estate if they need or want a bridge to given them access to Clayton le Moors. The simple answer is no we don't. The majority of people living here drive to local supermarkets to shop and as most parents work we don not have the time to walk our children to school. Why spend nearly £97K on something that is not needed or wanted surely the money could be better spent elsewhere in Clayton le Moors. The petition we did against this bridge several years ago showed this however now time has passed the council think they can do what they like. The 1st the residents have heard about this is when the planning has been approved. People living on this estate do no want or need access by foot to pubs, clubs, libraries.
