PENDLE MP Gordon Prentice is backing the decision to build a new state-of-the-art health facility in Colne.

Earlier this week, East Lancashire NHS bosses announced they have moved a step closer to buying the fomer Kwik Save site in Craddock Street.

Now Mr Prentice has expressed his relief at the news and urged Pendle Council chiefs to ensure work is started on the development soone. He said: “The decision to site the new facility next to Colne bus station and very close to the town centre must be the right one.

“This £10 million investment will be a significant boost to improving the health of the people of Colne and West Craven, and will be another major addition to the town following the SureStart Children’s Centre building opened last year.

“The new facility will need planning permission and I hope there will be no delays. I want Pendle Council to pull out all the stops.

“It is essential the proposed launch date of early 2011 is achieved.”

It's nice to get some enthusiasm from Mr Prentice for a change. Though I don't expect him to give any credit at all to us local Councillors who have been working hard to persuade the PCT to go on this site!

But he is a bit premature in his slightly pathetic efforts to claim some of the glory. I don't think the PCT has yet told Pendle Council it has clinched the deal for the site, and they certainly have not yet applied for planning permission.

When they do the application will be treated properly like any other and the consultation timetable laid down by legislation and the government will be properly adhered to.

In the meantime, we understand that if the PCT are going ahead with this site, they will be carrying out their own consultation before applying for planning permission.

Funny how after so long Mr Prentice is suddenly taking an interest in local matters.

According to Gorgon we have to tighten our belts, but hold on while British pensioners face the choice between ‘eating or heating’, UK taxpayers will cough up nearly £500 million on schools and hospitals in Pakistan in a bid to buy off Islamist extremists blamed for terrorist attacks such as that in Mumbai last month.

This figure is in addition to the £1 billion given to Pakistan in July this year.
