A CALENDAR featuring century-old photographs of a rural Pendle town has been launched at an annual event.

The Barnoldswick 2009 Bygone Days calendar was officially unveiled at the town’s Autumn fair, at St Joseph’s Parish centre on Saturday (October 4).

It features 12 photographs, some of which are over 100 years old, and was put together by Barnoldswick town councillor Jennifer Purcell, with some help from Jono Adamson, of Coffee Corner, in Rainhall Road, who is also a keen graphic designer.

All of the money raised from the sale of the calendar will be used to pay for new doors at the entrance to St Joseph’s RC Church, in Gisburn Road.

Coun Purcell said putting the calendar together was a ‘labour of love.’ She added: “The launch was a big success, everyone had a really good time and the calendar went down well.

“All the pictures are of places such as streets and businesses in Barnoldswick, going back as far as 1889.

“My husband Harry’s grandfather is on one of them as he was one of the first bakers in the town.

“There are also pictures of Gisburn Road School being built and the railway station from when steam trains ran through Barnoldswick.”

The calendar was printed thanks to support from the Pendle Conservatives, who provided the materials and equipment.

Coun Purcell said they are hoping to sell 500 copies of the item to raise the £1500 needed to pay for the church repairs.

She added: “We needed to print it free of charge and no-one was willing to do it.

“We saw the Pendle Conservatives at the Barnoldswick Town Crier contest and asked them to put their money where their mouth is and luckily they were able to help.”

The calendar is available, priced at £3 from the D&A Newsagents in Gisburn Road and Fun & Games, in Albert Road, or by calling Coun Purcell on 07966 039019.

It has been dedicated to Father Michael Krychiwsky, who recently departed St Joseph’s after 11 years of service and is described by Coun Purcell as an ‘inspiration to the town.’
