PENDLE residents have been warned to protect their bank details after complaints scam artists are targeting the area.

Police issued the warning after two householders in Barnoldswick and Earby were targeted by callers claiming to be from BT.

On both occasions the callers asked the victim for their bank account details because their direct debits had failed, police said.

One householder in Barnoldswick was told, on September 22, the balance on his account was overdrawn because his direct debit had not gone through.

The victim gave the caller their bank details and two unsuccess-ful attempts were made to debit £80 from their account. On the same day a homeowner from Earby became suspicious when they were asked for their bank details and refused to give out any information.

Upon contacting BT they discovered the phone company had not made any such call.

Sgt Matt Henderson, of Nelson police, said people need to be careful who they give their details to.

He said: “Do not disclose your details over the phone.

“This is a scam aimed at getting people’s money.

“They go into elaborate details saying there has been a problem with their direct debit and ask for their bank details.

“People need to be aware that companies such as BT will not make such phone calls because they already have bank account and personal details.”

Anyone with information or who has been the victim in such a scam should contact Nelson police on 01282 472604 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
