AROUND 50 customers had to be evacuated from the Fence Gate Inn after a Sunday lunchtime fire.
Firefighters from Accrington, Nelson and Colne were called to the Wheatley Lane Road premises, Fence, at 1.45pm after a compound behind the pub caught fire today.
Nelson crew manager Matt Armstrong said: "When we got there, there was a huge plume of smoke coming up.
"It was an external wooden compound that was full of bottles and carbon dioxide cylinders.
"It was well alight and the barrels at the back were heavily smoke-logged because it is attached to the compound.
"It could have been serious but luckily it wasn't."
Diners and drinkers were allowed back into the pub at around 4pm.
The cause is being investigated, although it is not thought to be malicious.
