ABOUT 50 customers had to be evacuated from a pub and restaurant after a Sunday lunchtime fire.
Firefighters from Accrington, Nelson and Colne were called to the Fence Gate Inn, Wheatley Lane Road, Fence, Burnley, at 1.45pm after a compound behind the pub caught fire yesterday.
Nelson crew manager Matt Armstrong said: "When we got there, there was a huge plume of smoke coming up.
"It was an external wooden compound that was full of bottles and carbon dioxide cylinders.
"It was well alight and the barrels at the back were heavily smoke-logged because it is attached to the compound.
"It could have been serious but, luckily, it wasn't."
Diners and drinkers were allowed back into the pub around 4pm.
The cause is being investigated, although it is not thought to be malicious.
