A HUNDRED pink balloons were released in memory of a popular nursery school worker who died from breast cancer.

Sarah Leach, 30, who lived in Fence, died in May after a six-year fight against the disease.

On Friday a special service was held in her memory at Walton Lane Nursery School and Children's Centre, where she had worked since 2004 It culminated with the release of 100 pink balloons.

Sarah's parents, Chris and Ruth Leach, and fiance Glen Hargreaves, attended the event.

The nursery plans to hold an event in Sarah's memory every May.

Money raised will go to the local hospice and a fund set up in Sarah's name to help children and families at the centre.

THE IMPRESSIVE VISUAL IMPACT OF THOUSANDS OF BALLOONS BEING RELEASED INTO THE SKY MAY LAST A FEW MINUTES, BUT THE IMPACT ON WILDLIFE AND THE MARINE CONSERVATION ENVIRONMENT MAY LAST MANY MONTHS WITH POTENTIALLY HARMFUL CONSEQUENCES

Since 1990 it has become questionable whether balloon releases are still within the law. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, it is an offence to drop "or otherwise deposit' litter in a public place.
The Marine Conservation Society, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Tidy Britain Group and the National Farmers Union share the view that balloon releases should not occur in the UK given the evidence for the harm that they cause to wildlife and the aesthetic damage to the environment.

It is recognised that balloon releases are often associated with charitable events and fund raising. Whilst not wishing to prevent such events nor spoil peoples' fun, it would be unfortunate if money were to be raised for one good cause only to find it is responsible for the blight of another.
