A HASLINGDEN man who gained notoriety after breaching an anti-social behaviour order 25 times has died in a car crash in Scotland.
Derek Maxwell, of Hillside Road, who had mental health and drinking problems, was killed in the Isle of Skye on Sunday night.
The 36-year-old Glaswegian had been with a friend travelling in a car on the A87, one mile west of Kyleakin, police said.
The car was in collision with another vehicle, but police would not reveal any more information about the crash.
However, they did say they were anxious to trace a third vehicle involved in the incident that failed to stop at the scene – believed to be a Landrover Freelander.
Mr Maxwell died and two other men received leg and back injuries in the accident and were taken to the Broadford Hospital, Skye.
The accident came during the Country Road Weekend – a police awareness campaign aimed at reducing the number of people seriously injured or killed on country roads.
A spokesman for the Northern Constabulary said collision investigators have carried out a thorough examination of the scene and an inquiry team involving additional officers from Lancashire were con-tinuing the investigation today.
In May Maxwell was jailed for 120 days after he was caught swearing in public and later admitted breaching his ASBO for what was the 25th time.
Burnley magistrates heard that Maxwell – a long-time alcoholic with mental health problems – was banned from being drunk in public in Haslingden.
His case prompted Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans to call ASBOs ‘next to useless’.
Mr Evans added: “They are seen as a badge of honour by some people who get them, and as totally irrelevant by others.
“These new figures show that there needs to be a rethink over how to tackle anti-social behaviour.
"More police time is being wasted and people’s lives are being made a misery.”
