Blackburn Rovers fans have quickly turned their attention to the summer window after their Championship status was preserved.

John Eustace can now plan ahead for another season in the second-tier with discussions about recruitment set to continue over the upcoming weeks and months.

Part of those initial talks will be outlining who will stay and who will leave when Rovers confirm their retained list. Some Championship clubs, who have known their fate for a while, have already confirmed their departures.

FA rules stipulate clubs must notify their soon-to-be out-of-contract players of whether or not they are to be retained by the third Saturday in May, which this year falls on May 18. That includes academy players too

It is then up to the clubs to publish the decisions at their leisure, though the EFL publish all clubs’ retained lists on the second Saturday in June. Rovers are expected to do that in advance anyway.

So, here are the first-team players out of contract, what's been said and how likely they are to sign fresh terms.

Kyle McFadzean

McFadzean signed a short-term contract with Rovers in January, arriving from Coventry City. It was a leap of faith from the defender, who had been with the Sky Blues for five years.

Gregg Broughton told The Lancashire Telegraph that there were no clauses in the McFadzean deal that would trigger an extension. So fresh terms have to be agreed.

McFadzean and Eustace have both voiced their desire to sort a deal for the 37-year-old to be at Ewood Park next season. McFadzean has added experience to the dressing room, a voice on the training ground and has performed well on the pitch too.

For me, a new one-year deal is a no-brainer. Rovers need more characters of his ilk and he is an asset to the dressing room too.

John Fleck

It's fair to say things didn't work out how Fleck or Rovers would've hoped. Like McFadzean, the Scottish international signed on a six-month deal, leaving behind Sheffield United in the search for first-team football.

His Rovers career lasted only 17 minutes after being forced off at Deepdale. Fleck underwent surgery on his shin and missed the rest of the season.

Like McFadzean, Fleck will need to renegotiate terms if he's to extend his time at Rovers. Given his recent injury record, I wouldn't renew his deal.

Rovers have Sondre Tronstad, Joe Rankin-Costello, John Buckley, Jake Garrett and must also consider Lewis Travis in their squad planning.

Tyrhys Dolan

Rovers have a 12-month option on Dolan's contract, which they will obviously trigger. However, that will have to be formally announced on the retained list.

The club have offered a new deal to the 22-year-old but that is yet to be signed. Negotiations with Dolan have been ongoing since last summer, though parked at various stages.

Rovers will sit down with Dolan in the summer to discuss his long-term future. The likelihood is he will either agree on a new deal or be sold, though Rovers would be due compensation due to his age if he left for free at the end of 2025.

Sam Gallagher

Gallagher's situation is the same as Dolan's. Rovers have a 12-month option which they are expected to trigger and a new contract has been tabled but not agreed upon.

Where the striker differs is his age, salary and recent transfer interest. Rovers rejected bids up to £1.5million for Gallagher from Ipswich Town in January, citing that window as the wrong time to sell their senior striker.

Gallagher is also one of Rovers' top earners. The striker will have to sign a new deal in the summer, which might be on a reduced salary, or Rovers may have to sell him too.

Eustace is a big fan of the forward's work rate and he has proven Rovers are a better team with him in it. But the club must weigh up his salary, injury record and the need to add more proven goal-scorers to the team too.
