BLACKBURN boss Mark Hughes swooped to sign Francis Jeffers today - and two more new faces may join him at Ewood later this week.

The former Charlton player became Rovers' second signing of the summer when he officially put pen to paper on a two-year deal this morning.

And another current Premiership striker - believed to be Wigan's Jason Roberts - may also sign for the club in the next 24 hours as Hughes steps up his summer recruitment drive.

The move for Jeffers came totally out of the blue after the player's representatives contacted Rovers late last week to say the player was interested in a switch to Ewood.

Hughes asked for 24 hours to think over the proposal and, after careful consideration, he decided to push through a deal, believing he can resurrect the former England star's career, just as he did with Craig Bellamy last season.

However, the Rovers boss isn't finished there and he's also looking to clinch the signing of at least one more striker this week - and possibly even two - as he closes in on a couple of other targets.

Left with only two senior forwards in the shape of Shefki Kuqi and Paul Gallagher, Hughes knows he needs to bring in at least two proven hitmen to fill the void created by the departures of Bellamy and Paul Dickov.

Jeffers will be the first of three new arrivals up front and Hughes is ready to dip into his £10 transfer kitty for two others as he looks to assemble a squad capable of making an impact in Europe next season.

While some fans may be sceptical about Jeffers' arrival, given the way his career has gone over the last couple of years, he's a player Hughes knows well from his time at Everton.

On top of that, first team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki also worked with the 25-year-old at Arsenal, and the Rovers coaching staff believe he could turn out to be a shrewd addition if he rediscovers the kind of form that earned him that £8 million switch to Highbury five years ago.

Jeffers joins Rovers on a free transfer and the club have offered him a 'heavily incentivised' contract in the hope that will fire his hunger.
